When to Know You Need Help

  • When your recreational activities result in legal consequences
  • When you are becoming a victim of your own choices
  • When your substance use is beginning to create family and relationship conflicts
  • When it takes most of the day to recover from what you did the night before
  • When you cannot remember on a regular basis what you did the night before
  • When your "recreational" use is beginning to cause financial problems
  • When your use becomes your primary recreation and loss of interest in other hobbies occurs
  • When your use results in absenteeism from work and decreased work performance
  • When you have to justify your use and subsequent behaviors to family and friends.
  • When you prefer your intoxicated or high self over your sober self
  • When you are self-medicating depression, anxiety, disappointments, and other feelings with alcohol and drugs

Do You Have a Substance Dependency?

The ‘CAGE’ is a frequently used tool to determine a substance dependency problem. Two positive responses are considered a positive test and indicate further assessment is warranted.
  • Have you ever felt you could Cut down on your substance use?
  • Have people Annoyed you by criticizing you about your substance use?
  • Have you ever felt Guilty about your substance use?
  • Have you ever had a drink or used first thing in the morning (Eye opener) to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover?
